Our Staff Profiles
Amanda Elkins, Director, Attorney
Amanda Elkins began serving University of Iowa students at Student Legal Services in September of 2014. She graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2010 and served as a Student Legal Services intern during law school. Amanda worked in private practice and as a judicial law clerk before returning to SLS as an attorney. She is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and Coralville Public Library Board of Trustees, and serves as a Prisoner Advocate on the University’s Institutional Review Boards. In her free time, Amanda enjoys reading, gardening, and kayaking.
Alyssa Pomponio, Assistant Attorney
Alyssa Pomponio joined Student Legal Services in May 2020. She received her JD from the University of Washington School of Law in 2012, and is admitted to practice law in Iowa, Washington, and California. Alyssa previously worked as a public defender and civil legal aid attorney in Washington state. After moving to Iowa in 2017, she worked at the Office of the Sexual Misconduct Response Coordinator, helping to coordinate the University of Iowa’s Title IX response. In her free time, Alyssa enjoys ceramics, hiking, and cooking.
Rachel Korach Howell, Office Manager
Rachel Korach Howell is a UofI Theatre Arts graduate, originally hailing from the East Coast. Outside of her administrative experience, Rachel is a co-founder of Fourth Room Theatre and has worked with the majority of theatre companies in the Corridor. She’s directed for Giving Tree Theater, ICCT, and for the Brucemore’s Classics production. She has also directed for the UI Theatre Department’s nationally renowned New Play Festival and Gallery series. Rachel writes on and off for Iowa City’s Little Village Magazine and of her original plays, Horatio’s Purgatory won the 2011 Iowa AACTFest & Regional Alternate awards. Rachel is pleased to be a part of such an inclusive, supportive, and motivated office, and to be in a position of service to the many students attending here.
Katie Santangelo, Senior Outreach Coordinator
Katie Santangelo is a senior biomedical engineering student from Homer Glen, Illinois. She is the President of the University of Iowa’s Engineering Student Council. In her free time, Katie enjoys painting, hiking, and playing with her puppy, Zia.
Jessica Williams, Outreach Coordinator
Jessica Williams is a 3rd year Journalism and Mass Communications student from Glenwood, Iowa. In her free time, she loves to workout, sing and play her various instruments (ukulele is her favorite), and go traveling to different fun destinations with friends and/or family. Fun fact: She hopes to one day continue on her family business in NHRA Drag Racing and drive her own car one day!
