How is assault between or involving college students investigated?

Assaults involving University of Iowa Students that occur on campus are investigated by the University of Iowa Police. Assaults that involve a Student that occur off campus are investigated by the local law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction of that area. Assaults committed by a University of Iowa Student may be investigated by the Dean’s office, regardless of where they take place.

What is the definition of simple assault?

Assault in Iowa is defined as any of the following acts:

  1.  Any act which is intended to cause pain or injury to, or which is intended to result in physical contact which will be insulting or offensive to another, coupled with the apparent ability to execute the act.
  2. Any act which is intended to place another in fear of immediate physical contact which will be painful, injurious, insulting, or offensive, coupled with the apparent ability to execute the act.
  3. Intentionally points any firearm toward another, or displays in a threatening manner any dangerous weapon toward another.

What is the definition of aggravated assault?

Any person who commits an assault as defined above that results in bodily injury is guilty of a serious misdemeanor that is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of $315-1875.

Any person who commits an assault as defined above while using a dangerous weapon is guilty of an aggravated misdemeanor and faces up to two years in prison.

What is the legal definition of domestic violence?

Domestic violence is any assault that is committed between two people who have any of the following relationships: Family or household members who are related, separated or divorced (former) spouses, people who are the parents of the same minor child, persons who have been family or  household members residing together within the past year and are not residing together at the time of the assault, or people who are in or have been in an intimate relationship and have hand any contact with one another in the year preceding the assault.
